Perspectives

Yesterday, a drunk man from our area lost control of his motorcycle and fell off the road. Fortunately, he wasn’t seriously hurt. But instead of being concerned about his fall, he stood up and began searching frantically for a package he had brought along. Despite help from nearby people, the package was never found. Eventually, still drunk and empty handed, he went home accepting whatever had happened.

Today, I spoke with someone who had witnessed the incident. She laughed and said how funny it looked seeing a drunken man stumbling around, searching for something he might have already lost on the way. I get it sometimes, things do look funny from a distance. But I couldn’t help replying, “It might seem funny to you, but there’s a lot more perspective than we might think or feel.”

To me, it wasn’t funny at all. I thought about the man’s family maybe they were waiting at home for that package. Maybe it had something important in it. Or maybe they were just tired of living with someone whose drinking causes chaos and worry every night. What’s funny for one person can be painful for another. That’s why perspective matters. We often judge the surface, forgetting the layers beneath.

In the end, everyone has a story. What looks foolish, funny, or trivial from one side can be a source of stress, sadness, or even silent suffering from another. And perhaps, that’s the one thing we must always remember to see beyond the obvious. That is the power of perspective.
